Lecrae Lights Up Tiny Desk with His Performance

Lecrae - NPR Tiny Desk

Lecrae's Appearance on Tiny Desk

Lecrae made history with his appearance on the Tiny Desk Concert, becoming the first Christian rapper to perform at NPR headquarters. Tiny Desk has showcased some of the best artists across many styles over the years, so it felt long overdue to finally see faith-based hip-hop represented in this space. Lecrae was the right artist to open that door, bringing both credibility and purpose to the moment.

Lecrae's attributes to Hip Hop

Hip-hop started from the streets, and over time it has grown into something global. Faith has always been present in the culture, but usually in small doses. Artists could mention God here and there, but going too deep often led to criticism, especially for Christian rappers who were seen as less “real.” Lecrae changed that. He stayed bold about his faith in his lyrics while keeping everything else—his sound, delivery, and storytelling—authentic and relatable. That balance is a big reason why his music connects with such a wide audience.

The Set on NPR Behind Lecrae's Music

For his set, Lecrae opened strong with “Coming in Hot” and moved smoothly through a total of eight songs. The performance included tracks like “Spread the Opps,” “I’m Turnt,” “H20,” and “Bless You,” along with “Tell the World” and “I’ll Find You.” One standout moment came with “Die for the Party,” a 2024 track inspired by Kendrick Lamar’s “Watch the Party Die,” where Kendrick even reflects on what Lecrae would do. The whole set felt energetic but still personal, showing both his range and message.

Behind Lecrae was a full band that helped bring the performance to life. Lawrence Swoope and Reshard Baham handled the keys, Joshua Dunham played bass, Nate Robinson was on drums, and DJ Mykael V kept things moving. Joe Williams added trumpet, while Madicin and Liz Vaughn supported with background vocals. The Tiny Desk team, led by producer Bobby Carter and director Joshua Bryant, made sure everything sounded and looked clean and powerful.

This performance wasn’t just another set—it marked an important moment for Christian hip-hop. Lecrae showed that faith-based music can stand on the same stage as any other genre and still feel real, strong, and impactful.
